Inherited collection... help I.D. some nice rocks!
« on: October 14, 2017, 06:30:18 PM »

Found this forum and am impressed with the level of knowledge! Hopefully, you can help send me down the right path.
Here's the first of a few:
I do not know the origin of this. It's 59.6 grams. It appears a bit more red than the photos.
I was told it is a raw ruby - but it lacks the typical hexagonal geometric corundum shape. Thanks in advance for any insights!

The only way to know is do some tests.  The most diagnostic would be to see if it will scratch quartz.  (agate or jasper)  I agree, it looks like carnelian.

I’m puzzled. I could swear I see bubbles in that first photo.

bubbles,  their casting marks from the Pillow basalt flow. Gas pockets.
Calcite crystals form first then silica later in the formation. why a lot of agate from Lebanon Oregon and the NW. area has cast markings from the largest pillow basalt flow in the world with a 70% silica content. for the rock pile out back. Oregon the best to be a native rock hound. .  you see impression of the calcite imprinted in the agate.

Brazilian agates have a lot of calcite holes in them.  I have 20 listing on my Brazilian agate  page. of hollow geode Brazilian agates.

Thanks for the prompt responses! I think some external/surface occlusions might be lighting up to look like bubbles.
I have a few more interesting samples I'll try to upload today. Thanks again!

if it is significantly softer than quartz Mexican opal is a good guess based on color.

Any density test I can perform before having it evaluated? Thanks for the input! My goal is to at least have a good idea what to call these before getting an evaluation. I know just enough to make me look ignorant.😀

Found this interesting tip for determining specific density - I'll give it go and report back

Took me a moment to figure out how this works but it's pretty ingenious.  I've never seen this one before.
