Wenden marble
« on: March 26, 2018, 06:20:56 AM »

This is one of Orrum’s rocks. 3 1/2”
Nice material, no pits, cracks, or flaws and it took a great polish and was easy to work.
We will have to make a trip to the mine next year when we are at quartzite and get a truck load

Great sphere.  I really like that material.  The fact that it is easy to work with is a huge bonus.

Marble is easy to cut but it can sure make a sludgey mess in the saw.

This one might have solved an ID problem for us. We got a small chunk of something with similar colors and patterns in an estate lot some years ago. Patterns differ a little, but colors look right on the money. Would make sense because the guys who had it did a lot of collecting here in AZ.

The chunk we have is 6 to 6-1/2 hardness and has a couple of diffuse small faint brownish orange areas in it. If that fits with your sphere material that would answer a question that's bugged us both every time we've seen that rough chunk.

Marble is moh’s hardness of around 4. If your rock is a 6 1/2 it is too hard to be marble so it looks like you still hav an unknown rock.

Crap. That's what we've always called the one we have. As in "Wonder what that crap is... .". That's the only downside to old estate buys. Some of it's impossible to ID, and that tends to bug me.

I was hoping the Wenden Marble might've been something a little harder. It was a longshot anyway - the piece I have is more brecciated than what I see in the sphere.

Thanks for the info on the Wenden.
