Morrisonite Jasper cab
« on: August 30, 2018, 01:12:58 PM »

This was my first cut after I joined the SDLS. It was the end cap from a fist size piece I have.I need to get the club using a slow cerium buff for polishing there. The piece was sanded to 600 and polished on a high speed buff. Came out nice with the orb pattern on both sides. Looking forward to sharing more over the next year while I am here in San Diego.

Why did you stop at 600?

The club shop I just joined (SDLS) only has belts that go to 600. I am not cutting in my own studio because I relocated to San Diego for a year. They don't have enough machines to go past 600 and not confuse members not seasoned to change belts out. If I had a slow speed buff and not a high speed I could get the desired polish.

Nice!!!

Welcome to San Diego! I live just east of town in Spring Valley up on the hill.  I haven't been much for clubs lately. Spent most of my life in them and was the one who was there for everything and got burnt out.  I'm pretty sure both San Diego and the El Cajon club are great.  The good news is that if you're a rockhound, San Diego is relatively close to the Cady Mountains and other collecting sites around Barstow. The bad news is it gets too darned hot to do much for about 6 months.

Nicely done, Shain!  Good to see you posting again.  That stone is going to be killer once you get a proper polish on it.

Nice to see you back to posting. I have used a slow turning carpet covered wheel with cerium oxide for a very long time and it is my go-to unit for nearly all of my polishing activities.

Thanks guys, I am really going to enjoy the SDLS. There is the Gem and Mineral Society too at Balboa Park that has classes too and a shop. Will be back tomorrow for a few hours to line up the next pieces I will be working on. Then back to Payson for 5 days to turn over the cabin and get more rocks for cutting at the club.

Updated polish with finger print(doh!) One sunlight shot that really shows color and pattern well and one shop light shot.

Nice shine, and the last pic does show better the splash of red in one corner.
