QUESTIONS ABOUT USING PROPANE/OXGEN
« on: May 20, 2017, 01:30:02 PM »

I want to use propane and oxygen for metal smithing.  I formerly used oxy/acetylene.  I have two questions initially.

1)  Do I need a special propane regulator or will an acetytlene regulator work?

2)  Where can I buy a spark arrestor for propane?

I'll be using 2 torches with a "Y" adapter, a Smith Little Torch and a Hoke jewelry torch.  Any special advice for that kind of hook-up?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I have a similar set up but with Natural Gas. You will need a Propane regulator. 2. Get the regulator where you buy your Oxy tank. 3. Ask the gas dealer, maybe a Gas or Oxy. one will work. I have multiple shut off valves in the system.

When I worked in a jewelry gallery. We used Oxy. and Propane for casting because it was hotter and cleaner burning. The bench jewelers all used Natural Gas and Oxy. for their work. even on Platinum.

Thanks for the info.  My problem is I can't find a dealer in my immediate area who understands what I'm talking about.  They're all oriented toward large-scale industrial work and snicker when I tell them what I'm doing.  I've used propane/oxy before and really like it but I want the new system I'm setting up to be safe.  I like your idea of multiple shut-off valves and will incorporate it -- when I can find a supplier who sells that kind of hardware.  Looks like the closest one is about an hour's drive away.

Call Rio Grande and ask their technician people exactly what you need.  They have all the regulators and flashback arresters in stock:
