Outrageous Cab Contest December-January 2017/18
« on: December 01, 2017, 06:55:25 AM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

I'm extending the cab contest through January because of the holidays.  Folks are so busy this time of year, there's not much spare time to enjoy rock cutting.

After New Years, y'all better start cutting!   :whip2:

My wife Margie recently finished this little Lightning ridge free form, our user here is for both of us so I think its fare game, this was all hand sanded up until the final polish on cerium oxide, she did not take a picture off the rough but I did manage to get one of the first roughing stage, hope thats ok.

Lovely creations, both, the coral as well as the opal.
Two entries thus far, and I'm already at loss as to what to choose; I love the intense red colour, yet I do adore the colourplay in the opal too.

Nice FA. Impossible for me to do. With my OCD, I would never be able to decide what layer to follow, and in the end would likely ruin it.

After months of idleness, I finally got the inspiration to start a proper project. So the first one, entirely freehand, with a flat back should suit this contest. Should have something to show, contribute here within a few days.

i decided to get through the heavy orange layer and call it good.
What i ended up was your fault, i remember your posts a long time ago, colors i ended up with going through the polishing stages lol
I cant figure out following one single layer yet. more practice needed. (or higher quality rough lol!)

:) :) Always needs practice, but you got good material, and the tools to work with.
Now the only thing that is missing is a bit of luck to get a super piece out of what you got.
I don't buy anything marked High-grade or in bulk (by weight), I'm way to cheap to spend that kind of money, and yet, from time to time I still manage something in the top grade. Only a small part of that is (in my case) practice, most of it is simply pure luck.
On the other hand, just about anyone can buy expensive stuff, and then produce super-cabs.
The challenge is turning average rough into something worthwhile or special.
