Something a little Unusual but cool....
« on: November 18, 2014, 08:20:17 PM »

Now a friend of mine gave me this piece of unusual drift wood and thought I could figure out what to do with it. Now picture this in your head. A pile of drift wood as a base with tall grasses, then this thing taking off just on top of the grasses all with the biggest shade I can make to sit over top of it. Carnelian of course. Now those card board wings will be done in stained glass dark grey, royal blue and white. I wanted to put a light under it to high light the wings but I have learned when you try to do too much, all you get is a mess. So just take a look at the photo and imagine.

I had a little time to play today so the duck is on a temp base just to see how it looks. with a full size shade on it, the vertical shaft is now going to have to be steel or cast iron. Can any one say " HEAVY". The base needs to be a bit wider as well. So back to work. Hope you like.

Just another shot of all the copper temp set. Will hammer and green tomorrow, then set it all. Then to figure out how to make the top of the wings brown and green and the undersides white. Hmmm.... Two layers I guess. Decided on no shade. Will set in a small night light in the bottom to high light the carnelian and gently light up the wings. I don't know....

Oh wow, that is definitely going to be a very special piece!  I love your design skills, I find them very unique and refreshing.

I have a question, maybe you have answered this before but I am old and I can't remember what I did yesterday.  Do you slab and polish the pieces you incorporate into your work yourself?

Yeah, the duck was really happy where I had to stick  with that rod for sure. Yes I do polish the stones, but just to a satin finish. I don't like shiny stones in a lamp unless it's turned on. Satin finish stones light up nicely.  People please never try this. It's getting to be a night mare project. These wings alone will take years off me. So here's a sneek peek at the first almost finished wing

Whaaa, those last few pictures drive home the scale you are working on.
Thats huge! No wonder you get problems. The sections of the wing must weigh a lot, so getting suitable connections, and the balance right, must be a killer.  :occasion14:

Yep, The DUCK is actual scale. A real full sized duck for sure. The wings have weight only because they are two layers thick. White on the underside and Green on the top sides ( not shown ). So far it's at the 60 percent finished stage.
