Outrageous Cab Contest March 2018
« on: March 01, 2018, 06:51:32 AM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

I guess I'll lead off this month.  This is a cab cut from a slab of Apache Dendritic Rhyolite.  While this material isn't highly silicated it takes a surprisingly good polish.  The piece was challenging in terms of composition but I finally decided the main "scene" had to be the focus of the cab.  It reminds me of a vista on Mars or some exotic planet.

It's a large cab with a polished back, measuring about 49 x 34 x 5.5 mm. deep.

Wow gemfeller that's a nice piece. I'll enter mine to be a good sport. One seller called it Cobra Jasper another called it Script Jasper, I'm going with the script as it looks like some sort of writing.
It's got a lot going on, I made straight edges to line up with the pattern lol

The sphere is on the machine!

I reposted the finished cab with a different background color, on the advise of my wife and another esteemed forum member.
When the wife looked at the finished cab pic vs. the sphere pic she told me I couldn't start the photography business I was thinking about starting  :LOLOL:

Super cabs, both of them. Challenging for sure when choosing layout.
Think, I'm going to join you a bit later if I can finish the cab I envision.

Wow, looks like we're going to have a contest!  I'm sure more great cabs will show up soon.

Sandsave, the name I've heard most often for the material you used in your fine cab is Coquina Jasper.  Here's the Google link to images:  https://www.google.com/search?q=coquina+jasper&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiB_7qG7vjZAhVjiFQKHY08D3oQsAQILQ&biw=960&bih=434

Nice Noreena, I did take my Noreena sphere back and ran it at 8K turned out much better.
I also seen the Script/Cobra called Elephant Jasper maybe we should rename it Coqcobsriphant just to make things interesting!

Nice bunch of entries.
I will keep the jasper thing going... My entry is a brecciated jasper of unknown origin. I picked it up in a box of slabs at an estate sale a few weeks ago.
50x38x7 mm  Two sided with very low domes and a double taper on the girdle.

That is the classic Stone Canyon material.  Still have a couple hundred pounds of it from my field trip plus I have one chunk that is several foot diameter and about 10 to 12" thick.  Because I held the trip the owner let me take as much as i wanted free!  Yay.  Love this material once you work around or stabilize the fractures.

Glad to know what it is!  There were fractures in the slab but I cut this piece between them... So where is Stony Creek/Canyon?  :dontknow:
I love the material. Mixed hardness between colors and a bit of a challenge to polish but in the end I was happy.
