Title: Gold prospecting trip yesterday
Post by: Phishisgroovin on September 07, 2014, 09:53:50 AM
called my brother terry to see if he wanted to go bust open bedrock and suck out everything under the rocks we moved.
He was game.

Picked him up at 5:30am and headed east to the club claims.
Arrived to see one of the club members packing his camp up. chatted for a bit, showed my brother terry what i did last weekend.

we planned on doing alot of the same thing, but failed to bring the snot sucker( hand dredge).
Sooooo, plan changed into just finding a nice spot to dig.

As we were digging, a bunch of rocks on the bank fell and ended up being (for what we think) a little too dangerous to just leave that way.
so we moved them into a safe place on the stream bed, we rinsed every single rock off on the way to the pile lol!
it was like jenga but different, we could have gotten hurt, so we started at the top.

after getting the pile down a bit, i noticed some nice slimy clay behind the pile stuck to the bank, so i scooped it into my bucket and ran it. scraped it all the way down to the bedrock behind it.
well, there was very little gold back there.

alot of work to keep the next miner safe but it was worth it in the end.

found a few of the clear stones shown in the second photo.

I'm assuming those clear stones are quartz?
Kudos to you and your friend for keeping the stream safe for other miners!

im hoping these clear stones arent quartz lol!

Having them looked at by my neighbor when i see him.
Too many mineral factors of the claim area tell me these arent quartz

Diamonds then?  Or perhaps some other high grade clear crystal?

im just going to call them welfare diamonds.
so atleast they will still be diamonds.

Im going to heat test one, heat to hot hot hot and drop in cold water.
If it shatters they are right, if not they are wrong.

Just doesnt look like crystal to me one bit.
Texture is all wrong under magnification.

there is a whole industry built on the Herkimer "diamond"
you'll find a use for them...

Did you take them to a gemologist?
Or did you just have someone else eyeball them?

i heated one of them, it turned white and shattered like on the inside when dropped in water.

Definitely quartz then!
You could still mount them in rings you know. There are folks out there with a taste for natural uncut quartz crystals.

Drill a hole in them and string them into a necklace. I'll bet it'll sell nicely!

Dennis, my brother Terry & I are heading to my creek to pan some yellow stuff up.
I need a day in the woods.
Even if its sitting my fat behind down on a rock watching them dig or me rock hounding after the winter floods up there.
cant wait to see if i find me more tiger jasper or anoy other jasper up there.

If they don't shatter TOO easily I can drill holes in them with my ultrasonic drill and turn them into beads for you.

I think the wire I'm using will allow 22 gage.  I will measure it when I get home tonight.  I have been drilling holes in Amanda's micro opal chip thingies...  Amanda, will you go stick a wire in one of those please?  :D

Quartz crystals like that can also be found in Payson, Arizona. They call them Payson Diamonds. They look similar to the Herkimer but grow differently. I have also found one in Arkansas at one of the crystal mines and they are lovingly referred to there as "Arkimers". I use to use them to put in little pewter dragon's mouths or hands and sell them that way....at least the baby ones like those.
