A Big Egg - Cut with pictures!
« on: June 13, 2018, 08:07:24 PM »

12x12x16, roughly. It's hard to get a wide point-to-wide point measurement.
Big.

Richardson's said they can handle it so I'll take it up there if it passes the tap test in a few weeks and have it cut. It's got a crack on one end that I want to tap to make sure it doesn't fall apart and bind in the saw. Even if it does break, I'll take a big chunk up and get it faced if it looks worth the time.

Haha yeah will not be cheap to cut tho, hopefully it's got a good inside! It's got proper pressure ridges so I am hopeful. Will wait until after the local shows are over before taking it in.

Doesn't matter what turns out to be inside, the wait to find out must be difficult. Congrats on uncovering that one!

It's cut! Still in need of a good scrub, but overall pretty neat.

I know people sometimes have a running commentary to give on Richardson's, but I've had good experiences with them and been happy with their cutting services and this was no exception. Very pleased with the cut.
I think the crystals are a calcite. They're too brittle to be quartz and are flat on the terminated end.

Thanks and trying not to! Cool day, only 100 this afternoon.

The hexagonal calcite fluoresces bright pink under a bedbug light, and I think the common opal will too under the right black light. It's a nice big example of a tilt egg and pretty clearly shows multiple stages of mineral precipitation. One of the cracks is even partially filled back in, making me wonder just how recently some of the opal was laid down.

What a fascinating interior. I'd be pleased with it, too!
