Trilobite Fossil
« on: March 01, 2015, 12:54:26 PM »

Hubby and I picked up this fossil at Tucson.  The vendor wanted to give us a deal on 19 of them but we just went with the one...

It's about 6 or 7 inches long I suppose.

Gina that one is nice!
I think it needs a display stand in a dark wood to prop it up at an angle so it can be viewed from a distance as well.   :headbang:

The dude who was selling this had some pretty cool fossils.  He had some real BS too- I am half not sure if this is real, but it looks cool.

Quite possible he had some BS.
Truthfully when I look at the picture I think of dyed cement.

Turn it over and drop some vinegar on it.  If it fizzes, you have your answer.

The overworked matrix is a classic sign of a Moroccan constructed fossil. Heat a sewing needle to red hoy & press it into the bottom of the matrix. I'll bet you'll smell burning plastic.

The Moroccans take bits & pieces of real fossils & reconstruct them. The matrix will be made up of local dirt mixed with epoxy. If you look under magnification, you may see air bubbles in the matrix, and possibly in parts of the trilobite too.
