A Durmortierite buckle for an old friend
« on: July 05, 2016, 02:34:29 PM »

I reconnected recently with an old neighbor from when I was growing up. He was the brother of my first girlfriend.  He was admiring my buckles so I promised I would make him one of his choosing.  He said Black or Blue and since I had picked up some very nice Durmortierite at this last Quartzsite I knew what to cut.  I just dropped in the post today to him although he doesn't know I made him one or the color so it will be a surprise.  The Blue looks great against the brass.  I took the whole thing thru polish and buffing wheels for the brass and I didn't like the radius on the dome so took the whole buckle back to 220 and did it again.  It didn't want to take a polish at first with Cerium Oxide on rough leather so I switched to Hard Leather and Chrome oxide and kept the pad wet and the shine came up.  Turned out rather nice and I hope he likes it.

It's a stunning color and a beautifully-made gift!
