Mystery Obsidian
« on: December 18, 2017, 04:02:16 PM »

Well, it is a mystery to me.  The photo shows 2 cabs that I cut out of a slab of Obsidian obtained at our recent silent auction. (They are not finished. Still have some scratches to work out.) It was in a bag of 6 slabs with no identification on any of them. There is no transparency in the stones. It works really well like most obsidian.

Can anyone tell me what it is called and where it comes from?

Also, where can I get some more? Actually, this is the more important question!

This material with the gray lines is fairly common. It can be found in the same area as Davis Creek rainbow obsidian.

Glass butte in central Oregon is another source along with mahogany, gold sheen, rainbow and lace.
This is called silver sheen which is obvious when cut 5 -10 degrees off parallel to bands.

in alot of the silversheen, you will also see inclusions of rainbow coloring within the darker bands.
I have a piece with the rainbow inclusions and the silver sheen. its in my buckets out back somewhere, i seen that and set it aside for a future project when i am set up better to cab rocks in a faster pace INSIDE rather than out in the freezing cold or blistering heat.

Thanks for the answers. As usual the forum comes through.

I always thought that silver sheen had a lot of transparency. Obviously not since these cabs show no transparency even with a bright flashlight behind them.

Unfortunately I didn't have anything but the already cut slab and that now that's in cabs.  If I get some rough, I will keep your comment in mind.

Some of my sheen from Modoc Co. CA.
Lassen CR., Davis CR. Ceder CR. and where every you park!
Mt. Lassen 22,500 ft. nice looking rock!
The web-page has the Electra blue sheen.

It's the Silver sheen photo, cut exactly through the temperate cooling bands. I find  A band  color pencil it around the piece. that way i Sq.  the rock too the blade. if the first cut is out. loosen the vise - tap the color of the sheen so as too adjust the color bland out flatter.
Most sheen well loose color on domes, Flats,  facets are better.    SPHERES.  for the Bull's eye.

Mexico city has some nice sheen.

Jack,

Thank you for the photos and cutting advice.  Looking through some of the obsidian that we collected years ago at Glass Buttes, I may have some silver sheen rough.  Will follow your advice. However it is cold right now in southeastern AZ and the saws are outside.  Will have to wait some. Projecting mid 70's next week so maybe...

OK, again thanks to everyone who helped (replied).

So here's another one to help me with. This came from our trip to Glass Butte.

What is this obsidian normally called? I thought this was silver sheen!

First picture is slab with front lighting, second is illuminated from behind and below the slab. First is wet, second is dry.

Obsidian is A fluid in motion, unlike agate, or jasper when solidified - agatized.
For  the lucky few in living in 1400 year old castle, well your windows are thicker on the bottom then the top.

Jerry in the back light slab. I see a cross cut to the cooling bands.
When a piece of obsidian has been folding over on it self down slope.
orientation  of the cut is very difficult  to get.

Though if the folding is a hot roll Fire obsidian maybe in the roll of the cooling bands.
cold roll well - need the cooling heat too leave a plane of silica tubes in the bands to show a refractive  light index. of the spectrum in the cut.

Why most say 3 degree - 16 degrees.

Not me down the plane of heat band. the adjust to the color. of the material.

Translucent with contorted black ribbons is called "Midnight Lace" (comes from the middle of the eastern border of the Glass Buttes collecting area). When there is a mix of black and reddish ribbons in translucent, it is called "Triple Flow" (can be found in the same general area).

There is also "Red Ribbon" (wavy reddish ribbons in translucent), "Double Flow" (less contorted black bands in translucent) and about 150 more named patterns at Glass Buttes. I've been waiting over 2 decades for someone to post the entire list on the Internet (hopefully with photos), but no joy so far.

If you cut parallel to the color bands and look closely at the parallel fibers in the band you can cut a catseye cab.
