Backlighting
« on: June 13, 2016, 03:43:15 PM »

While cutting some Jade, I wanted to see how transparent it was. I took my clamp on shelf lamp and clamped it to the back of a chair at table height, and turned it upside down. I took the lid off the Cool Whip, and it fit fine. The lid has an edge that will support your slab.

Just don't walk away.  It looks like a fire hazard.  But good idea to substitute for a slide previewer (now obsolete because no one takes slides, but there are those of us old enough to have hundreds.  Tom

Maybe substitute one of those cheapo LED bulbs from Lowes or Home Depot - they run much cooler than incandescent. I like the idea though; the lids make a nice diffused backlight.

That works beautifully. I will be saving some lids (or buying food with suitable lids!) to try this out.
Gorgeous piece of jade by the way  :love4:

cut a piece of solid heavy paper just a little smaller than the stone. Place between stone and light. You should get a better lighting on stone.(depending on camera)

Thanks, that is a great idea which I will be trying.  For the person who did not see transparent.... translucent is a term many of us use. It is very easy to see this jade is very translucent. I love jade with flowing lines.   awesome
