Any reasons NOT to consider Buehler grinder/polisher?
« on: April 02, 2023, 10:09:33 AM »

I found offered for sale a decent-looking piece of scientific equipment (originaly used for preparing metallographic and petrographic samples mostly for microscopy) that I think might work well as a lapidary flat lap. It's a manual Buehler Beta single grinder/polisher, with an assortment of SiC and diamond discs. Comes with an 8-inch plate.

Here are examples of similar-looking machines:

And here is a double version of the same instrument: https://www.ebay.com/itm/334435855840

If i could get this at an affordable price, I think it would work great. Am I missing anything important? Has anyone here had experience with Buehler grinders?

If it is not compatible with Ameritool or all-u-need diamond flat polishing -sanding pads it will not be very useful.

Good point. The platen has no hole, it takes magnetic or PSA-backed discs. I am fairly certain I can get it to work with at least some of the usual lapidary supplies.
