Title: Making maple syrup
Post by: William Phillips on March 09, 2019, 11:42:12 AM
One of my other hobbies is making maple syrup.  We live in Northwestern PA and have been making syrup for 25 year.  We have about 500 taps and make 100 to 140 gallons a season. Our season starts in Feb. and runs till late March. It takes nearly 43 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon syrup.
This is another hobby that grew out of control.

I live in western Oregon and learned that you can make maple syrup from our Big Leaf Maples here. The sugar content is not as high in the sap as that of the Sugar Maple but I bought 10 taps and tubes and was able to make a pint of syrup from many gallons of sap. Fun, but time consuming.

Sounds like your hobby turned into a business. Or you have a lot of friends and family that gets all of the syrup they can use 😁
