What does one have to do to capture the flash of a flash opal? I have tried a dozen different tactics and I have not come close yet. I can see the flash but the camera just picks up a glare

try reducing the exposure a bit...

I take allot of opal pics as a professional opal cuter and dealer it defiantly takes a while to get it right but I have it down fairly well. It helps if you start with a good camera and then add even better lenses preferably macro to get close to what the human eye actually sees. I just covered some of this on the topic called "new lens" I think, check that post and you can look at some of my photos on my website aandsopals.com or facebook A&S Opals LLC. Let me know what you think and I can help you more if you need. good look shooting

Thanks! I will check out the site. I loaned my old Sony Cybershot to a family member who seems to have misplaced it, so I am stuck with just the camera on this iphone until I can get a real camera
