Outrageous Cab Contest May 2017
« on: May 01, 2017, 02:19:01 PM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

Well I thought I would get an early start since I didn't put one up last month.  I started a different cab yesterday but it had a hidden flaw so went with a backup piece of Condor.  I love this shape.  I had bought the rough a couple years ago in Quartzsite and figured that although a thin seam it would have great pattern.

Nice colours, and you managed to get a beautiful balance in your layout with the fortifications.
Intended for setting or drilling?

Probably setting but had no plans, just wanted to cut a cab for this month.  I have never tried drilling and think it would be a chore without the right tools.  It would hang well though if drilled.

That is cool. drilling actually is more tedious than difficult.
in a little and back out. continually until it pops through.

Im betting if you sent that to lithicbeads he might drill it and send it back so you can wear it or hang it off a rearview mirror.  :LOLOL:

I have a better idea.  How much do you want for it?  I'll buy it from you.   :icon_sunny:

Tiffany Stone, here's a cab from the trim left over from sphere I posted for Mother's Day. This is a busy one. I finished both sides you can take your pick. The one side has a druzy pocket around the red in the center and light passes through. Some small hairlines that are healed. Dropped it and lost the tip so the preform a little different from the finished cab.

Hi All

The last couple of weeks a lot of bad weather here and today it is sunny and 85 here. I am not able to indulge in my addiction er hobby much when it is warm. We did make it to Nethers farm and had a good time even if it was only for 1 1/2 hours on the way home from a wedding. So far I am about 50% usable material from the slabs I have cut from 4 rocks.

My entry if from the first rock. It was small and I got 5 killer slabs from it. The pic in the sun makes it look like on the left side that it is just ready to flake off. If it is it is below the top polished layer and no sign on the edges or bottom. Please correct me if I am wrong but dont you call that a healed stone?

Bless
Shawn

Nice colours on both, the Tiffany as well as Shawns cab.

Shawn, I think your cabs colours would look even more impressive when taken without direct sunlight.
Just facing a door or window, will bring out more intensity in the colour range.  JMHO

Nothing like a nice rich Purple color in stones.  It is no wonder that Purple is always considered a royal color.

Ok, here we go.

Let me start by saying thanks to Bobby1 who sold me this challenging slab eons ago. Due to the alignment of the fibers (original cut) and the thinness of the slab, I never dared to challenge it. Now I have grown a bit, so I finally I dare to get carving.

As said, one slab, 3 challenges on 3 different platforms.
Namibian Pietersite, "The Slab"

Cut-offs and preforms, wet

Done. The smaller cab is  the easier of the two cabs, as its small, so realigning the fibers to get all round effect was rather easy. Has full colour-range head on, as well as from most angles. This bigger one, needed an extra day of rubbing away on 2000 grid paper to get more chatoyancy into a head on view. Still needs an angle to get the full effect, but it turned out quite reasonable. Like the intense colour, and once one sees the effect its smoth as silk.

Colour changes with light-source, but overall its a bit more intense to naked eye than in pictures.
Here my fav picture thus far

Thanks for looking, Kurt

I felt obligated to get an entry in this month so here is mine.

Dead Camel jasper in a teardrop shape.  Wife helped me search through rough for some small chunks that showed signs of blue (and even have some with green, although not in this piece)

Slab and preform are one and the same.  Just started shaping the slab and let it work itself into a pleasant freeform.

Finished stone is about 3 inches long.  Has a fracture along the dark red area in the lower left but seems to be solid.

I haven't done much cutting this month due to an aching back but when I saw the calendar today I decided to get an entry in at the last minute.  This is another riff on Dead Camel Jasper.  Some has a strong similarity to original Owyhee and I liked the pattern on the end of this slab. Large patterns require large cabs and this one ended up at about 29.5 x 52 x 5 mm deep.

Funny, the last thing I think I would envision with a dead camel is something beautiful but both of your cabs are fabulous!

irockhound, the name comes from the Dead Camel mountain range in western Nevada.  I think it's a terrible name for the jasper too but it's mined near there.  The story goes that 75 camels were imported by Jefferson Davis, then Secretary of War, in 1855 to help work the mines in NV and AZ.  They were later turned loose to survive as best they could.  The mountains were given that name when a prospecting party found one of them dead there in 1891.

They were used as pack animals, they can carry way more weight than a horse, use less water, stay fat off desert brush. Unfortunately their feet could not hold up to travel over the sharp hard rocks.
