Title: Collector pieces
Post by: Stonemon on December 17, 2016, 04:01:39 PM
Not sure if this is the right place to put this but.... :dontknow:
I have been working up a bunch of Trent agate and I have found that most of the buyers that I am dealing with are not making jewelry out of the pieces but rather adding them to their collections.
I have taken on cutting shaped, polished flat sided pieces of high quality material for folks to display or just stash for their own pleasure. These are polished on both sides and ready to display are stash for an investment.
The response has been good to this point and I thought I might share this series of pieces as I complete them.
Here is the first.
Is there a place for "collector pieces" or "art pieces"?
Off topic, I hate ice in my shop!
What do you think?

I would display pieces like that. I have a 6 x 12 inch slab of tiger iron that I can't bring myself to cut. I'm going to polish and display.

This is a fine place to put your collector pieces, which are stunning and definitely rock art!   :icon_sunny:

I will cut anything! I see two great cabs in that first one. I like to display rock art in silver.   Vic

Well, the holiday season almost completely wiped out my stash of Trent collector pieces.   Today I am in the shop cutting more.
Here is the first of them. I did cut a taper on the girdle of this one as it has a much stronger pattern on one side so it could be bezeled if someone was so inspired.
46x35x7  70.5 ct. polished with a low dome on the front and a flat back...
What do you think?  :dontknow:

Some real "show" pieces. I've not seen a Trent agate quite like that before!

The light was not good today but I did get another finished.
57x35x7mm flat polish both sides...
One of the things that I have found is that there are stringers of what I believe to be hematite in the rind. They polish up metallic.
There is also a fair amount of arsenopyrite? in the chalcedony portion of the rock.
Hard to get a shot today that does this one justice.

Finished this one yesterday... one sided, pretty serious soft spots in the yellow sagenite. But a stunner anyway.

Another I was able to get out of an end cut. I had to get it with the trim saw but it worked out.
42x35 tapered from7mm on the wide end to 5.5 on the narrow.
Polished on both sides, very low dome and double tapered girdle.

Incredible work and material.  What would a stone like the last one be worth.  I have never see top quality Trent available for sale so have no idea on the value of such a piece.

Thanks

I guess it is worth what you can get for it. I have been charging between $100 and $150 for a large (30x40mm) or similar size and people have been consistently buying them.
There are others out there but some folks want a lot for material that is not as nice as this.
The supply is extremely limited and I maybe should try for more but I am not really inclined to.  :dontknow:
Best regards,
Bill

This slab has been hanging out in a tray waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. It was slabbed by my grandfather in the 1960's and is wedge shaped. 5.5 mm on the small end and 2.75 mm on the wide end.
I finally just polished it on both sides and will sell it as a specimen. It is a great piece and I did not think cutting it up would be the right thing.
4"x 2" at the wide spots...

Agree, do not cut that piece up....  I think we have all made that mistake before.   what a beauty

I think you did the right thing by polishing it for a specimen.  It's way too beautiful to cut up.  I don't know if I would be able to part with it if it were mine.  I'm kinda sentimental that way.   :icon_sunny:

That's a gorgeous material and a beautiful piece to display whole; I agree, the whole piece has something that individual small pieces would not.

The holidays have reduced my inventory of collector pieces.
Back in the freezing shop today..... fire in the stove and warm water in the water supply bucket, I managed to get through this one.
46x27x7mm
Two sided, flat polished and a double taper on the girdle. Second shot shows girdle pretty well.

I ground this one out last night.
42x22x7  Polished both sides. Straight girdle. Could not do much removal or I would have lost the spray of realgar.
Probably a wire wrap piece for someone.

I finally braved the ice and got the unit running last night.
Here is a two sided piece with the double taper girdle and a bunch of druzy.
58x28x5 mm

A lot of stuff just looks nicer if you have a bigger piece.  I've made the mistake of cabbing a nice looking rock ... only to be disappointed in the cab.   You have to have some tight or smaller detail to make a cab work for a lot of stuff.  I slabbed a nice jade, ocean polished rock a few years ago ... it was beautiful as a ocean polished jade ... sucked as cabbing material.  I am a "fixing" to do it again though ... have this really nice ocean polished teal colored jade piece from jade cove .... but I'm gonna slab it and see what it looks like.  I guess its a matter of perspective or orientation ... if you collect agates you probably collect slabs or halves and love to look at them.  I cut cabs and make jewelry ... so I'm always looking at rough with an eye to how I can cut it and make something out of it. I like a lot of rough in big sections ... Norrena jasper, some poppy jaspers, etc ... I cut small cabs mostly and they just lose their appeal in small cabs.  I mostly go for color nowadays as I can make that work.
