Working on Another Piece
« on: July 16, 2015, 11:07:18 PM »

Working with a "new to me" polymer clay technique called Sutton Slice.  It should be called "Sutton Swearing" because I did a lot of that trying to get it to work according to all the instructions I read online.  I watched a tutorial on YouTube and followed it exactly.  Lots of swearing and crumpled balls of clay ensued along with clay stuck in stamps and cleaning them out.  I've become adept at cleaning rubber stamps, it's an art form!

So far this is what I have done for components going into my next FMG contest entry due on July 30th.  Nah I don't procrastinate to much now do I?

The red blob on the bottom is a molded Quan Yin.  She has been baked and is now heading for embellishment!  When done she should look a lot like her Sutton Slice cousins, just without the large quantities of swearing.   :)

That black on red looks pretty cool(hot), guess we'll have to wait for the rest of it. Looking good so far.

Are you going to keep using the technique?

Very intricate, but Kan Yin is certainly no Asian one. In all my years around here, I have never seen her plump.

Interesting fact with Kwan Yin: We still do not know where and how she came into China.

I hope she is not an illegal immigrant, seems more and more countries are having that problem as has been in the news lately.

Well the Kwan Yin I molded this from was carved in China according to the packaging.   :icon_scratch: :dontknow:
The piece in question I received is carved Carnelian.  I then molded it so I could make one using the faux Cinnabar clay mixture.

Gina was over today and I worked quite a bit more on this piece.  Just need to sculpt dragon heads now.  The main focal with the dragon bodies is in the oven as I type this.  You bake larger pieces like this in stages, cuts down on the nailbiting factor.

You are baking this stuff outside aren't you? Fumes produce nasty stuff to breath you know?

The only time you get fumes is if you are baking it at to high of a temperature or have nasty hot spots in your oven.
I tent aluminum foil over the entire pan during the baking process which alleviates issues with hot spots and also prevents fumes.  Any fumes fuse with the aluminum foil that is tented over it.  I follow baking times and temperatures pretty closely so that way I don't have problems.

Main focal just came out of the oven.  I managed to finish the sculpting today even with a migraine headache.
Now to antique it, apply rub on leafing, glue in faux opal eyes on the dragons, and then of course repeat said antiquing process and leafing process with the other pieces and assemble.

Lovely piece, very bold and a lot of character. I feel like there's a story behind this one...
