Outrageous Cab Contest July 2018
« on: July 01, 2018, 07:59:07 AM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

This is a piece off the sphere from this rock (check sphere section for finished sphere)

Ooooh very pretty.  I have several pounds of this stuff and need to slab it!   Need a saw big enough...cart before the horse, lol.  Beautiful work!

Sandsave, that is a killer Laguna!

I'll go ahead and enter this month.  It's been a while.  My 12 year old son and I collected many different types of agate this summer in southern Colorado.  We found quite a lot of blue agate, which I'm really excited about.  It's not as deep blue as I had hoped after it's worked, but still interesting I think.

Not sure what this is. I bought a small bag of slabs at the Reno gem shows silent auction and this was in it. The moss Looks like chlorite to me. Someone may have a better guess. But it’s my cab for the contest.
What interests me doesn’t always interest other people, lol

Got the hay and firewood in. Finally got back in the shop.
My entry is cut from a $2 slab I bought in Prineville last month.
Montana dendritic, 35x24x6 mm.
Probably the most visually 3-D cab I have ever cut. The tube is amazing.

Sorry i don't have first picture. But I wasn't planning on entering this month. I was making a pendent for my son and kind of liked the way it came out. Here's a piece of coprolite for your entertainment.

Right down to the wire here.  It's been to hot to work in my shop but it cooled a bit today and with the help of a fan I did a quick cab.  I don't know whether to call this stone webbed variscite or chalcosiderite.  The guy who mined it sold it as variscite but later told me he'd found it's chalco. No idea how to test it myself.

This is the bottom of the slab:

Thanks Steve and Phish for your comments.  I LOVE the name ChacoVerisciderite Steve.  This stuff was mined in the 1970s from a spot just a few hundred yards from the Number 8 turquoise deposit in NV.  But it didn't have the copper content to turn it blue.  I like it as well as turquoise anyhow.
