Quartzite 2020
« on: December 04, 2019, 12:53:03 PM »

I am planning on making my first trip to Quartzite this coming January (yay!).  Looking at the calendar, there are lots of slots to choose from.  My goal is to purchase rough from vendors to take home and work with.  I know of others are thinking of going during the Pow Wow which occurs from 15th-19th.  Curious which weekend may be most desirable from all you seasoned veterans out there?!?

thanks in advance.

I mentioned in another post I always attend twice.  I go at the beginning of the month to get material before it is high graded.  An Example would be the Aussies in Desert Gardens.  They always bring large skids of material at one and the other Aussie has numerous barrels of rough.  If you wait till the Pow-Wow these are picked over and the best pieces are gone.  If you are looking for something specific then going early is best.  I go the beginning of the Pow-Wow to hit known vendors and pick up some of the specialty things I might be looking for.  If I had to go once I would choose the Pow-Wow opening and take my chances that there are still some good material that hasn't been picked clean from Desert Gardens and Tyson in addition to getting the fresh material at Pow-Wow.

The first time I went I showed up at the desert gardens the first week and all of the venders were not there yet or not set up. So now I wait till the second week and if I time it right I can catch the first day of the POW Wow.

I go the Pow Wow weekend.
This year I will be helping my friend Mia Benson man her booth the entire show.

Normally if I am not helping Mia, I would only go the weekend of the Pow Wow since I usually can only get the time off to do that one weekend and hit as much as I can.

Okay - time for a shameless plug. What's the booth number? We wouldn't want to miss it... .

If I knew her booth number off the top of my head, I'd answer that.  All I know is she is across the aisle from Christopher Anthony and his plethora of rough, slabs and cabs.  Her booth faces the I-10.

In the past her booth has been about the 4th or 5th vendor from the West end of the show, booths facing the 15

Thanks for the visuals. We know where that is.

Last time we were there we stopped by Christopher's booth, and there was a lapis dealer closer to the main building.

Rockhound BBQ Jan 18 at my booth at Desert Gardens AB22.
All rockhounds are invited, hamburgers and hot dogs are provided, rest is potluck, bring whatever you want.
If you have chairs bring them, there will be a fire pit afterwards.
Hope to see you there!

My shortest Quartzsite ever.  I was having a what looked like a weird hair across my right eye vision the day before Quartzsite, then driving down in the dark everytime I would look left right or up down I had a flash of light in the right eye.  Got to Qsite and called the wife to get me an eye appointment.  She responded that those are symptoms of detached retina and I should be seen immediately or risk losing sight in the eye.  Couple vendors I know voiced same concern.   Sooooo 12 hrs of driving for 2 at the show.  Saw a retina specialist the following morning and  found it to be a visceral tear which mimics retinal detachment but is not sight threatening.  Happy to hear no surgery but really sad I lost my Quartzsite for the year.

For me it is a thousand miles each way so I combine the trip with the Tucson show.  Tucson has very high end material but very limited variety.

Bad luck with the vision problem but very lucky  you don' have the vision threatening version as my wife does.
