Since the saw takes a good 45 minutes to make a single cut from that red block, I thought it time to pull out the genie and have a go.
My shop space is well ventilated but lacks climate control :P


Second ever cab taken at least to something of a polish. Not quite done yet- second pic is dry- but for my first time unsupervised, I think not bad? Trying to remember everything I learned back in the Seattle club, ... five years ago...
at least the weather here is pretty consistently nice in the evenings for the next few months!



And now I get to learn how to take pictures of shiny things.
Agate is local but displaced- I have a few small pieces of this stuff but no source. It shows up in road cuts from time to time and takes a nice easy polish. I tumbled some ages ago and it turned out great. This was just a hand-polished chip from my stash of to-be-tumbled-rocks.

That stone should look polished at 3000 diamond.

Uh... whatever's on that last wheel. I did look and then forgot what it was. I'll take a look next time I'm off and see what grit it is. Just using what it came with, but the previous owner was an opal polisher, so probably a final polish appropriate for that.

Ok, got my wheel grits written down.
Left to right:
80, (unknown), (unknown), 600, 1200, 14000.




Messed with it more today but nothing finished to show, just more practice.

If they are DP wheels they are color coded to the grit if that helps but I am sure you knew that.

Most likely your 2 unknowns are 220 and 280.  220 being a Galaxy (metal) wheel and the 280 being a Nova.  Your setup is the standard that was sold on the older Genies (mine and Vince's were both like this).  Since then they've switched the 14,000 for a 3,000 and added a 14,000 disc for the end on new machines because that step was a necessary, missing step.  Our solution was to purchase another right-hand shaft and outfit it with an 8,000, 14,000 and 50,000 wheel.  Very easy to just spin one shaft off and the other on when needed.

I did not know that! Thanks for the information. I've been collecting material for years, slabbing for almost a year now, but this is my first interaction with a cabbing machine outside of the Seattle club and I am a total newbie. It's totally ok to tell me stuff. I'm watching youtube videos and reading old lapidary magazines to learn right now.

This is a copy of the table on page 14 of the 2016 Diamond Pacific catalog.  I have made a large print (covers a full page) copy of this table and posted it on the wall of the cab lab at our lapidary club.  It makes it much easier than trying to read the labels on the wheels. Hope this helps everyone.

I have taken to using an electric engraver when I get new diamond blades (when they are directional) and even my laps and I engrave the direction or grit in them so should the labels ever come off and they do that, it is easily found.  I have a bunch of discs I got in a collection and not a grit mark to be had so I have to compare them with other grits and make a call on it. 

Side tip - anything electrical I buy - if it has a power adapter I etch the device name on the adapter - never have to wonder ??? which device does this go to???
