Jade cream
« on: December 13, 2015, 09:10:26 PM »

Jade cream or jade milk is the swarf or mud that comes off the wheel when grinding jade and a few other stones. The amounts vary even in high quality B.C. jades. Some have very little but I have cut hard B.C. jade that produces substantial cream. I have always imagined it is due to the magnesium content of the stone as other metamorphic and especially ultra mafic stones such as serpentine also produce the cream in large amounts.

A washington jade that only produces a small amount. This would lead me to believe that this jade has a high diopside content.

This stone is producing a moderate amount. The stone is a mix of chrome diopside , vesuvianite  and hydrogrossular garnet.

Well (with lips tight together and nose in air) you sure messed up my lack of knowledge opinion of what that stuff is. I just thought it was ground up rock that is still there because the water is not set high enough. Not once did it occur to me that it might be an indicator of what is in the stone. Flash bulbs going off in my head when I put this info into the same brain wave that has a picture of the swirls of color in the bottom of my polishing machine tub. 3,4,5,6, just counting the head bangs.

It is not fair that you know everything and I know nothing but I really appreciate you passing your knowledge along for people like me.

 :LOLOL: @ Jim.

Thanks for the info Frank.  Never heard of such a thing and since jade and I don't get along all that well, guess I'll never be the recipient of jade cream.   :WEEEE:

The usual rule is the more cream the more misery in getting a polish. Gergis and I are real stubborn and can get a polish on the most miserable jade . That kid has turned into a very good cutter with infinite patience when the stone acts up.Lots of fun .

Not sure if it has to do with the host rock or not but having polished lots of jade and grades from the same lenses the highest quality had very little cream and needed very little work.

It has to do with the magnesium content of the jade. Areas differ greatly in that respect.

You are probably right. I am how ever sending a bunch out for assay off the same lense from varying depths and quality see what comes back.
