Carved chain hearts
« on: March 14, 2021, 12:17:20 AM »

My latest carving in progress, I used a fine grain pink rather than imperial red rhodonite as this is a test carving to work out my procedure, its working so far, very challenging piece, currently sanding on 240 grit.

Very nice.  :icon_thumleft:  I have carved wooden chains in the past and toyed with the idea of attempting a couple links in stone.  Its a challenge.

The lighter material on these is interesting, looks more translucent than I would expect for pink rhodonite.
How do you deal with heat in these thin links? I tried some thin sillouette carvings a while ago but I couldn't prevent it from shattering on the higher grits.

Thanks for the great comments. I get very little heat when I Smooth and polish, I use diamond expanding drum belts on areas I can get to easily and diamond paper on the internal s by hand or soft diamond points, heaps of water used. The first steps of smoothing after rough carving I use silicon carbide sticks by hand wet, 220, 400, 600 carbide hand sanding then I change to diamond.

Thanks, all finished, I used a jade background for the photo, made the colour pop, no photo shop just good contrast.
