How often do I need to change the liquid for the blade. It is still cutting good. I just don't want to ruin the blade.
Is their a set rule on how many cut you can do before you should change the liquid for the blade.
Thanks
-
What size blade, & oil or water coolant ?
-
It's a 10 inch and I use laxative
-
Change it when you notice the oil getting brown and sludgy. Or sooner if you're more diligent than I am. When it starts carrying a lot of particles back up into your cut the cutting rate will slow down and the wear rate on your blade will go up.
-
Ok thanks everybody
Its time to change then its starting to turn a reddish brown now.
I hope to be posting some new cuts soon.
-
Jason, Don't take that color change to seriously. Mineral oil can get a lot of rock dust in it before it starts to get thick and affect the lubrication or cooling. I let mine go until it is more than cloudy and almost getting to a thicker stage than when you started. Then filter it in a paper bag and get clear oil again. Given a few days, you will recover most of the oil and be able to reuse.

Hi Tom
When the blade flings it on the top clear shill its kind of clear when it's cutting the rock.
When I looks in the bottom of the tank then next morning the top part of is kind of clear but the bottom of the oil looks
Cloudy red to brown.
I will look at doing at what you are saying.
-
The fact that its settling out and you have the clear layer on top after setting overnight means you can get it a lot dirtier (in my shop).
-
Yeah, Tom, it gets thick in my shop too before it's changed. That's what I meant when I said it gets "sludgy". Thin oily mud left on the rough before I change it. I should've been more "clear" in the way I said that.
That's the bad thing about a ten inch. I use it more than any other saw, so it seems like I change it a lot. It does get run so long between changes it seems like a new saw with clean oil... .

If it's brown the laxative is working.
-
I got a better question on this what other coolant is there that I can use?
I just got done changing it and it was like thick about half inch on the bottom.
This laxative is to risky when it comes to changing it.
I'm going to use my last 2 gallons and that's it I need to find something else. :LOLOL:

I'm looking at getting mineral oil from STE Oil Company $18 a gallon
I feel it will be safer for myself and the animals around here.

Most any mineral oil of that type is pretty much the same. The link you put up there refers to FDA and USDA requirements. That means it's probably very similar to what you're using now.
My ten-inch saw usually has that much sludge in the sump by the time it's changed, too. Small reservoirs fill up pretty quick.

Yea it just dawn on me what i typed in.
I was thinking it was 2 different things. Sometime i have to saw i dont think :Bash:
I like to collect rocks but when it comes to cutting, shaping them I still haven't started
cabbing anything yet. When i cut my rock i just make 1 cut and that about it. One day
i will get their and i will learn what im doing. Im thinking about just doing beads.
I try to mean well.

$12 gallon here. and i you buy $50 worth (I think) they ship for free.

If they ship free for that amount that might be the best rate I've seen yet considering the weight of the gallons and size. I'm going to need to fill a 24" here soon

They do ship free for over $50. So order 4 @ $12 ea. and 1 at $13 and you get 5 for $61 or $12.20 per gallon

I collect and cut only sludge free rocks! LOL As mentioned above check the oil after it sits awhile. I use mineral oil as long as I can see clear layer on top after settling I keep using.
-
Ya I quite asking dumb questions and started using Google first lol and just post photos here first.
-
I think what you need is a way to filter your oil and reuse it. It can be as simple as a paper grocery bag sitting in a collander inside of a 5-gallon bucket. The easy to recover oil seeps through the bag in a couple of days. if you leave it alone for a month or so you can get more oil out of the sludge. Some people press the sludge to get as much oil out as possible.
-
The paper grocery bag works great. I will post a photo(s) of how i do it. I don't use a bucket. I just have just learned it just better some times to use google. because i feel my question are kind of dumb. like me saying this.
-
There are no dumb questions. Just because you don't know the answer, doesn't make the question dumb. If you knew the answer and then asked the question, then that would be dumb, right? :LOLOL:

Changing oil in a 10 inch saw doesn't happen that often. Like they are telling you, let the bottom of the reservoir get sludgy. I do lose quite a bit of oil from misting and spray, which means I add oil as needed. I feel the most important thing is to have enough oil in there to keep the blade and stone cool. When the oil gets bad you will notice more debris and or sludge on the table top. Cleaner oil and it flows back into the reservoir.
-
Thanks a lot Grayco!! Glad to know where I will be buying oil next without the shipping charge. It's almost unbelievable considering the weight in oil I will need for all of the saws.... I'll take it!! :glasses9: I'm going to try the paper bag reclaim method this time as all I had ever done was let it settle in buckets and then siphon off the top. Cleaning 18"+ saws etc , sometimes it's like can we get Mike in here from the tv show Dirty Jobs. :coffee1:

The paper bag technique only works if your oil is still in liquid form. :angel9: :icon_thumright:

About that misting... I put one bottle of Bardahl No Smoke in the 2 gallons of oil in my 12 inch and the misting was reduced by 90%
