Title: "Banner stones of the North American Indian"
Post by: lithicbeads on October 14, 2015, 08:48:58 PM
Author is Byron W. Knobock , first edition 1939 , 596 pages. My copy of this book was from ebay. It had been found in a dilapidated old  Texas ranch house whose very old occupant had recently died. This book is a first rate effort and is widely recognized as such. I tried to increase the contrast of the pictures to make them more legible. An amazing book about a sadly neglected wonderful art form. If you think banner stones are exotic you would be surprised to know that they were at one time very commonly found on the farms surrounding Trenton New Jersey because of the deposit of diabase that is situated there as well as the cornucopia of  wild food that was once found within a few miles of Trenton.

Great story Frank. I mentioned this to Jimmy and of course he has passing knowledge of this art. He has a larger than fist size stone with three holes positioned in a perfect triangle but they do not go all the way through the stone. I have a stone with a ring chipped around it so it could be used as a hammer. But the hammer face has been broken and two holes have been drilled into it.

If I would have known you had an interest in this stuff I would have shown them to you when you were here. I will photograph them so you can see what I am talking about. I am writing a note so I do not forget. Probably not going to happen today because the weather was great this weekend (possibly the last) and I way over did it which means I got up to make coffee and am not sure I really want to get up again.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting and an eye opener for me.
Jim

Finally got the two stones photographed that have the holes drilled in them. The black one was found in Montana and the yellow one was found here in Wyoming. These are almost exactly the same size and you can see that they are a large fist size by the yellow one sitting next to the head of a 2.5 pound sledge hammer head.

If we would not have killed off all the descendants we might have learned a little more about these stones. I am very curious.
Jim

On the very top of this stone there are two dimples that are like finger gripping or finger worn low spots.

Another triangle on the back.

This stone has a groove around it like it was used for a hammer until the face where the two holes are broke out.

Very mysterious. I have been so busy I have not had a chance to post more from the book but next week should have some free time. I found a jade adze in my yard , about fist sized and used it as a massage tool until I misplaced it in the house. That is probably how the maker lost it also.

For some reason I only just now stumbled on this posting.  Please post more from this book.  As an Anthropologist who studied archaeology I find this fascinating.

There are some good images in other books but this book is a gem. Should I post more images?
