Rutilated Amethyst or not so much
« on: June 01, 2016, 01:56:42 PM »

I actually picked this piece up from a Home Goods store in my area for a cheap price. After staring at it for a bit, I noticed black looking material floating in a number of the prizms. I am not familiar enough with Quartz to tell if this is considered rutilated amethyst or not. Either way its beautiful in my opinion.

Most likely from Thunder Bay in Canada.  Google it to see for more Thunder Bay amethyst crystals. I believe it is one if not the only spot heavily included with the black spots. Very nice looking plates you have.

Wow, that's pretty.  My sister-in-law would love that piece.  She is an amethyst fiend.   :headbang:

The dark spots are, I think, probably hematite, which is fairly common in amethyst. A good display specimen!

Any brassy strands mixed in would be Cacoxenite.
