Bezel strips
« on: January 26, 2017, 07:38:40 AM »

I have a querry re bezel strips/wire. I am finding that they are very thin. Do most people make/ cut their own from sheets of silver. Is this the better way?

The bezel you use depends on the design of your project and personal taste.  commercial bezel wire is made for a rolled over edge using a bezel pusher.  Many people prefer their bezel wire to be fine silver (.999 silver) as it is softer and easier to roll over the edge of the cabochon.  If your design calls for a heavier bezel you will have to order rectangular wire in the proper gauge and size, or cut it from sheet,  again  fine silver would be softer then sterling and easier to set.  With heavier wire you will have to use a hammer and a setting punch to get the bezel tight to the  cabochon.,

I do 80% with purchased bezels. They are thin so you can work with them. If you try bending thick sterling over the rolled edge of a cabochon, well it is not easy.

Thank you for your advice. Sounds like playing to find the perfect piece for each setting.
Thanks again

The first portion of the book "Creative Stonesetting" by John Cogswell deals with bevel setting of  cabachons in various non standard bezels, it would be a great place to start learning more about alternative bezel settings.
