Outrageous Cab Contest February 2017
« on: February 01, 2017, 06:41:15 AM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

A sphere to the winner. A piece of Onyx I traded for with Jhon, 2 1/2" it's a little porous but that's expected. Still eye candy!
Good luck everyone.
I hate to change this, but I will only pay shipping to the winner inside the USA, I had to ship some custom electrical devises over seas last week, they weighed 14 lbs. cost over $100 in shipping.
Sorry to the members outside the USA. I will ship overseas if the winner wants to pay shipping.

Thank you for the fab sponsorship Sandsave.

Looks like, I'm in first this month.
Still a work in progress as there is some finetuning to b done (both: cab as well as sharpness of picture)
No rough picture, but got one after cleaning up.
Small little bugger 10x8mm to be used as inset into a larger cab-project. Mexican origin.
Stage

As of today

Thanks for looking, Kurt

Love the intensity of the colours in the Picasso.
The Wild Horse cab looks even more interesting upsidedown with that 3D effect.
Lets see what comes out of your cab Shawn. A shame when things break apart after all the effort.

This started out as a much larger piece of Marlborough Australia rough. This was from my Dad's 40 year old collection. As I started grinding, I did find some cloudiness and felt the best shape I could get, after cutting out the flaws, was a tall triangle. I wanted a modern shape and will either set it as a ring or if a pendant then will set it with with a pink tourmaline, sapphire or garnet  brilliant and long, tall rectangle in lapis or other contrasting bright colors. I think this is a high quality stone.

Hi all

The pic below shows something that I wanted to save after all the breakage. It shows a plate of blue. I do think this stone is related to labrderite.

It stills needs work but I have over a week to finish it.

Hi all

I have 2 more pic's. I am not happy with either of them. I am sure that you agree my pic's skills are very bad. I hate it that I cant show what I see. I will try to get a "good" pic.

I do think that this will be my last entry until I learn to take better pics

Shawn,

Your photos aren't that bad.  Just crop them to get rid of the background stuff so you can see the stone better.

Here's a cropped version:
