I just purchased 15 gallons of mineral oil ( Industrial Oil 580) for $108.00  Works out to about $7.25 a gallon. I will put it into my 24 inch Covington saw tomorrow, I hope. The MSDS says it is safe and all the numbers look good.

Mineral oils are not all the same.  Some will remove paint, some will go rancid, some stinks and is bad to inhale. Just because it is a mineral oil does not make it safe or good for saw oil.  I will keep you posted.

PS:  While starting to clean my almost new 24 inch saw the paint on the bottom and vise area came off. I was using a putty knife to remove sludge. The previous owner said he only use mineral oil from a lapidary supplier. But the left over oil had a bitter smell and peeled paint. It did not seem to hurt the bearings or anything else. So be careful even with mineral oil.  Neal

Hey Neal, isn't 580 a lubricant used in food processing machinery?
I would like to
Know how it works for you. I buy from a company in Mound House Nevada
ID corporation
I buy a 55 gal drum and share it with a friend. Rock cutting specific mineral oil
The one I bought 2 1/2 year ago was $12 per gal. And the drum I bought last fall
Was $14 a gal.  580 costing under $8 a gal would be a good savings, I can get almost
twice as much for the price.

Not sure if they raised prices I bought 16 gals from SCA last year and got it for 12 a gallon, might be a quantity break and same free shipping.
Here is the reply I got back:

Good morning, Gary,

Thanks for reaching out to us about this. Unfortunately, no we don’t really offer price breaks on bulk orders. We do offer free shipping on order over $50 but that is about all the discount we can apply.

55Fossil, if I recall correctly you said the mineral oil you were selling from that saw was from Covington.  I thought it was strange that you complained about the bad smell because I use the same oil and it's practically odorless.  Now you say it's peeling paint.  I have a strong hunch the saw's previous owner used another type of oil before the mineral oil, and it contaminated the new oil.

Good luck with the cheaper oil you're testing.  Sounds like good savings for all of us if it pans out.

And the painters reply, No paint well last in a tank of oil. soaking Chips & scratches.
My old saws have seen many types of coolant since the early 60s.
Worse yet to use STOVE OIL no.2 ( works as well as, Paint stripper )

   Hillquest   used Gel-coat epoxy base.

Jack;  Yep, I would bet he used something else in the saw. Maybe something to extend the Covington oil as it is pricey with shipping. The best oil I have used was straight Mineral Oil from United Oil in Boise, Idaho. About 10 bucks a gallon and was perfect for me.

Penreco is what they call it.
I haul several hundred gallons down to Quartzsite every year and sell it there.
Lots of folks cant find anyplace to get oil so I sell out every year.

Try Tractor Supply on line.  $17.00 / gal.  Also supplement with Covington "hard rock"  which is an additive to the mineral oil.I have an old Star Diamond PF-10 which I love very much.  I have been using this oil for years.  Messy, but worth it.
