Two easy pieces...
« on: October 19, 2020, 10:41:34 PM »

These two should be easy to ID by the looks alone, unless you are me. Which you aren't, and that's why I am asking for your kind help.

The first one is jasper-like, but with this biogenic-looking pattern of segmented sticks. I've seen it before, but the name escapes me.

The second one has these swirls of brown in black matrix.

Thank you all!

Indonesian Feather Agate (fossilized foraminifera) on the first one?

If so, it will smell like really old pond mud when you cut it... .

They do look like some sort of fossil, but I hadn't thought of foraminifera since they are linear not round, but things do come in various shapes. The sections are there. Similar to cephalopod shapes from straight to round. The bottom stone, maybe a mudstone or siltstone?

Yeah, the "feather agate" I've seen had thinner - almost thread-like - critters in it.

The darker and lighter brown areas are similar to how that material looked, though. The better stuff was darker.

Maybe it's a different fossilized critter from the same part of the world.

In hopes of someone recognizing exactly what the first stone is, here are close-ups of the polished (actually, epoxy sealed) and the rough side.

I believe the second one might be a Peruvian Stromatolite, akin to the one shown here: https://www.spherestoyou.com/peruvian-stromatolite-sphere

What do you all think?

My first thought on the second one was stromatolite but in my limited experience the banding is often more turbulent and cloud-like than this.  See for instance https://www.catawiki.com/l/10973637-stromatolite-sphere-7-7cm-615gm and https://creelandgow.com/product/stromatolite-cube/
