Ohio Flint
« on: November 06, 2017, 11:15:43 AM »

This is a cab I cut from one of several slabs of Ohio flint sent to me by member Back (Shawn).  He wanted me to post an image.  I liked the flow of the pattern in the slab and the color arrangement, so I didn't do a lot of modification from the original slab shape -- just streamlined it into what I think are pleasing contours.  This stuff takes a hellacious polish!  Great to work with.

Flint is usually wonderfully silicified. They have blue flint inm England but hounding there is not popular and unfortunately it is not on the market. White , clear and blue  flints are so common in the chalk cliffs there that they are used as building stone.

Yes, it has been used throughout history.  Many of the artifacts found near Stonehenge feature English flint and some of the chalk mines that produce flint go back to antiquity.

Not from England -- Idaho originally.  But I've been to Stonehenge, Avebury and several other major English archaeological sites and am keenly interested in both archaeology and methods of stone-working in antiquity.

Beautiful cab!  We have some Ohio flint that I need to try cutting.  It's in the "going to cut soon" pile.   :icon_sunny:
