What she found under the tree
« on: December 25, 2016, 05:41:23 PM »

Alot of experimenting went into completing this piece: I wove the chain 24" from 24 ga sterling, wound the end caps, made the spring loaded tube clasp, fabricated the sterling setting and of course cut the amethyst. Enjoy!

Beautiful job on the necklace.  I'm sure she just loved it.  It the chain Viking Knit?  I really like the way you set the amethyst!

The necklace is a form of the viking weave that's done with a "pin" and woven freeform onto itself, not on a dowel as traditional viking knit is done. One student (who knows more of the thread arts than I)in a class  I gave said "oh that's crochet". The pin is used only to form loops, not to crochet the wire. This form gives a much tighter look than traditional viking knit.

That's interesting.  I've never heard of using a pin for viking knit.  Where did you learn the technique?  I'd be interested in learning more about it.  Thanks!
