Went on a group outing with the rock club to a large lake high in the mountains near here; 2 hours drive, to look at some "marble" that we had been told about. I may have to revaluate my earlier posting of limestone or this may be misnamed. Either way, it was a good day for rockhounding with showers around all day but we never got wet and great views of a huge, little used lake; it feeds the famous Adams River salmon run. Access is on a forest service road through the cedar, spruce, fir, and birch forest.
The lake from the beach where the mountain sheds the marble blocks; yes those big black ones are too. There is a dike that runs right through the mountain here about 1km. wide all the way across the lake and continues up the mountain on the other side.

I would say that would certainly make me rethink my position on Limestone to see that. Those colors and the banding are gorgeous. The banding and coloration definitely scream marble to me. What a great place to go! You'll have to show us what your chunk looks like when you cut it open!

They look remarkably like some of the boulders from the Elbow lake formation just south of the border.Nice spot.
