OK Folks.
Decided to start this place off with our first cab contest.
Winner currently gets bragging rights unless someone wants to donate a prize.
Since we don't have a lot of members yet I'm taking this contest to the end of September. After this all contests will be a month long.
Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest. NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden. You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc. Afterall this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest! We love freeform cabs! Pull out the stops y'all and give me the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces. Just the cab(s).
7) Cab sets are OK. (think pendant and matching earrings.)
So have some fun! :occasion14:
-
Woohoo! :blob1:
-
I'll throw a SFRB of slabs to the winner!

Now who wants to get some more folks here so we can have some good competition?
-
September... Ok I might be able to do that...
-
I'll throw a pound of red horn in.
Sandsave

Outrageous cab? Like the sound of that.
I'm in!
What is not allowed besides finished jewelery?
I think, I will go with this one for the contest.
Black opal, Lightning Ridge Australia. Expected size 34 x 25 mm
WIP cleaned up

Will let it rest here for a while, gotta work the rest of the week, and then lets see what to do with the upper half.
Best regards, Kurt
-
Yeeeehaw! Awesome start Kurt! I cannot wait to see the finished piece!
-
I have to do a set of 10 pieces for a friend. Too many?
-
It works Phil.
-
Thanks, but I had to start on them today.... so no before pics... :sad5: You wouldn't have seen much anyway, they are turquoise vein material, preformed to just 1/8th inch matrix on each side. so all you'd have seen are tan rectangles. The TQ is inside.......... When we started to uncover it, looks like they are going to be real high grade wowsers.... my friend will be very happy.
-
Ok so y'all have been posting some awesome rock in other threads, C'mon I want to see the cabs! :hello2:
-
Where is everyone?
Need some entries to make it a contest! :occasion14: :hello:

Don't know. But I think this is where I pull out the whip and start getting folks to bring all their friends over here so we can run this contest! :whip2:
-
Anyone???
We have 7 days left till the end of the month!
-
Well, hell, I had every intention of doing something for this, but on Labor Day I came down with the creeping crud and ended up feeling like poop for about 3 weeks. I just now have started to feel like doing anything. :dontknow:
-
Standing by. Got my piece basically ready. But need some entries to make it a contest. :coffee2:

Agreed. If I knew how to cut a cab I'd join in!
-
Well, I agree, you cannot have a contest without entries!
This cab is not terribly outrageous as far as cutting goes, but the stone needs to stand on it's own.
This is a piece of Austin Blue turquoise from Nevada.
I love the black to blue interface, it is a strong statement, strong stone.
I was surprised to get sparking while cutting, not so common among turquoise.
Completely natural, neither color shot nor stabilized.
Cut was made to maximize the stone. Final statistics- 52.5c 48mmx20mm Perfect for a large pendant, killer bracelet, or oh so awesome ring. :blob1:
-
Killer!!! :headbang:
-
Good look to it. Like all those vines going through the piece.
:blob1:
Will join you over the weekend.
-
Woohoo! Come on everyone, let's play. :hello2:

Down to the wire.. Here's my offer for the group.. Apparently Woodward Ranch Plume Agate from Texas.. Although it is unlikely any of these would classify as outrageous, I went more with the set approach.. Not really from the same slab, but from the same rock.. Material really takes a nice polish.. I really like these comps and hope they continue.. Cheers!

OMG!!! Jason!!! **faints**
I call them outrageous! I also happen to adore Woodward Ranch Plume!
-
that is some awesome plume in those :headbang:
-
Ok, this contest is going to be awesome!!! Kurt, Iceopals and Jason, YES!!!
-
THREE more days! C'mon y'all! I'm already drooling! Make me fry my keyboard! :toothy12:
-
Woodward looks good. :hello2:
Personally always find it hard how to lay out pieces with strong plumes.
-
I'm nearly ready, but dont like the face yet and after separating dolphins nose from the chest, the whole head had to be redone as too much of the nose came off. :)

So might still change to one of those if I can finish either the Montana, Phsilomelaine or the Dino.

I'm in.
Although far from outrageous also, mine is a stone that can no longer be hounded in Washington state.
Mossyrock wa blue agate, the riffe lake reservoir has been closed to any collecting of any kind whether its relic or rock, what you see on or in the ground has to stay on the ground..
