Title: Nipping pliers
Post by: lithicbeads on March 20, 2016, 12:21:59 PM
Nipping pliers - a stonecutter's tool from the past? These were very popular before inexpensive diamond wheels came around. Apparently people who work with flat glass use them. They are excellent for taking the sharp edges off of preforms, edges that can gouge even a hard diamond wheel at times. This stone had an incipient crack that propagated after I drilled it. To save some of the stone, I used the nipping pliers to crack the stone along the weak point.

Cool. Another tool I can shop around for. Knew that opal rough is sometimes nipped with tile pliers but hadn't seen these before. Robin probably has some - she started doing stained glass before lapidary.

I have tile nippers for doing glass mosaics and what are called running pliers that allow you to put pressure on a score and run the cut that way.  These are for glass blowing.  They use them for flattening or pulling molten glass into shapes.  Very cool tools.  If I ever ran across some, I'd snatch them up in a second!

My mom uses nipping pliers and other tools for her stained glass work; I don't think I'll ever be allowed near them with a rock XD but good to know!
