Hello. I've been on the welcome part of the forum,and I posted a picture of my combo machine there. I'm startling to put it back together, and I think I'm going to replace the two grinding wheels. At this point, I'm not sure how deeply I'm going to get into the cabbing part of rock hounding so I want to buy a couple of silicon carbide wheels, 100 and 220 grit. However, there seems to be many opinions on which ones to use. I'll probably be cutting into agate, jasper, and geodes for the most part. The current worn out wheels are: dark grey SIC coarse, and green fine. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have some brand new ones out in the garage. I think I paid $20 apiece for them if you are interested. I've got several others I use off and on too.

Silicon carbide wheels are just fine when trying to figure out the amount of interest you have in cabbing. Diamond is faster, but I've cut thousands of cabs with both, and either one will give you the same quality of cab. When you decide to take the full hearted plunge then upgrade to all diamond.

The green wheels are softer matrix. They are designed for grinding tungsten carbide tooling and will wear away much faster than necessary for lapidary use.
