The Migration of the old forum to here is taking more time than originally planned.
Simply put we hit a major snag...
The old forum was running on a much much earlier version of software than this forum is on.
It has created some headaches that Randy is getting help with fixing.
We ask for your patience while this process continues.
When things are done the old forum will be a fully accessible read-only archive on here.
-
It's very much appreciated the work to migrate the old forum's information. Be a shame to loose all the information that was collected on that forum.
-
just an update.
The database dump file provided by smfforfree host is rather huge, it is also OLD.
the old forum is running on a dinosaur program, the very first simple machines platform.
It will not install on my server easily.
until i can get the old platform to install here on my server, the old forum will pose as the forum archive.
Its just going to be awhile until i can figure out how to install the old ancient forum platform and old forum files.
-
Good to know.
It's to bad this is turning out to be such a headache.
I think I am going to make the other board read only at this point. We are keeping it up as an archive anyways.

GREAT NEWS ALL!!!
the old forum backup we spent the money on is now repaired, it will be uploaded and installed here on our own hosting soon!!
The technician from simplemachines had to basically rebuild the SQL file from scratch so its been a lengthy process for him.
He installed a test forum on his test server and has everything running smooth as butter, but on an updated version of simplemachines forum.
The new gemstone forum archive is on its way to being alive and operational again - HERE on lapidaryforum.net. :coffee1:

Excellent work, Phish! Thank you for all the hours and hard work you put into getting that board transferred over here. YOU ROCK! :WEEEE:
-
Yep, Phish, lapidaries the world over will now benefit from all the work you've done. Now, if we'd all send you just one rock each as an expression of our gratitude you'd have something else to keep you busy for a while, right?
What about the accessibility of the archive, though. Would it rate a new tab at the top of the home page? Or just a new "category" in the boards? My feeling was that the info is so good it might rate a tab at the top. I went into it just to look for a couple of old threads already.
Thanks again for rescuing it... .

i actually had to employ a master technician from simple machines to rebuild.
I didnt do it.
Sir osis at simple machines website is to be thanked, not me this time.
The SQL file we purchased for $50 from smfforfree owner was so fricked up i had no clue what to do.
nothing i tried worked, sir osis suggested posting a help wanted ad so i did.
Bunch of issues to work out, but its for the most part done.
Sir Osis has a paypal beer fund, doesnt want payment for the forum rebuild in general - but would gladly take a donation to his beer fund he said.
We (the staff here) will be making a payment to this acct in the link soon.

If anyone else wishes to thank sir osis for making the old forum come back to life on its new forever home, you are more than welcome to give him a couple bucks for all his hard work.
It (the old forum) was a gonner, he saved it from certain death.
Right now he is working on a 5 hour upload of more files to bring all the images that were in the backup we purchased back into the forum.
-
You're being too modest, Randy. Yes, Sir Osis is definitely to be thanked for unscrambling that SQL file and getting it to the usable place it is now. In my opinion the man is a genius! But, if it weren't for your dedication to find a way to not lose all of that valuable information, find Sir Osis and actually get him to help fix the mess that file was, it would have never have happened.
Kudos to both of you! :icon_salut:

well, its complete as its going to get.
some photos wont show up, i assume its because some were lost when George was having issues with the smfforfree hosting server issues.
Nothing i can do about that, sorry.

Cool. Still had the old forum shortcut in my favorites, so copied the new link into the properties box and it works great.

Not understanding ... I have the old forum shortcut in my favorites. I can click on it and it comes up. Is there something else I need to do? Whats "copied the new link into the properties box'?
-
he replaced the link to the old forum in her shortcuts so it points to the new forum when he clicks his shortcut.
-
Thanks for clearing that up, Phish. Robin might have explained it better. This username is her husband... .
