Title: Road trip from Kansas City to Sacramento, rockhounding suggestions?
Post by: Talia on May 03, 2016, 09:32:34 AM
Middle of June I will be driving cross-country between Kansas City and Sacramento. I can choose to take I-80 for the whole way, OR I can go I-70 through Kansas and Colorado to I-15 in Utah, then up to Salt Lake City and I-80 the rest of the way to Sacramento. I'm an utter newb at hunting for rocks and minerals, so I would like suggestions of places to look for agate and jasper or other pretties along the way. I won't have 4-wheel drive, and I'd prefer not to go more than an hour or two off the main route. Any suggestions are appreciated!

A perfect spot for a newbie would be Wonderstone Mountain in Nevada. It's an hour out of the way, but you can loop back to the 80 pretty easy.

Here for directions: https://books.google.com/books?id=K2Ti_Wh6VO4C&pg=PA149&lpg=PA149&dq=wonderstone+mountain+fallon+nv&source=bl&ots=ZOAw-LJoPg&sig=DYQcKXhpu2nQs5Pt-IXvljQMr7k&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiB6f3mq7_MAhWIth4KHaYzBskQ6AEIRTAG#v=onepage&q=wonderstone%20mountain%20fallon%20nv&f=false

IF you go, be discerning. Try to look for the highly silicated stuff, and reject the coarse grained rock, even if it has good pattern.
