Title: Setting a faceted stone
Post by: T P on May 14, 2016, 04:00:18 PM
I have a peridot that I faceted several years ago, and it did not end up as a standard size.  I have looked through many online catalogs for a setting that will fit but have come up empty.  Recently found a site that detailed how to fabricate a setting, and have completed a sterling pendant that will fit the stone, but have not been able to get much information on what is needed to fit the stone to the setting.

Any information on how to set a faceted stone, or resources on how to set a faceted stone would be apperciated

You failed to tell us the shape of the stone.  Different methods are needed to set various shapes.  There's a wealth of setting info available on line.  Try a few searches.

Rounds are generally set by using setting burs of the appropriate size like this: http://www.gesswein.com/p-4208-busch-burs-stone-setting-fig-413.aspx.

They thin the prongs and create a stone seat for the girdle.  The prongs can be pushed over the stone in several ways, taking care not to damage the stone.  Peridot's a little on the "tender" side - be careful.  I always trim and shape prongs with cone burs before pushing.  Some subsequent filing and polishing are usually required.

Some setters use nothing but 45-degree hart burs to prepare stone seats.  That takes some experience.  Others simply hand-file the prongs for similar effect.  Good luck with your project.

Best video I've seen on stone-setting; I review it every time I prong set stones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77XliTOj1T8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77XliTOj1T8)

That looks like a great video Debbie.  But I sure wish they offered closed captions.  I lost my hearing in an accident a few years ago and while watching is helpful I'm sure hearing the commentary is where the real information lies.

Thanks for all of the information.  Finally got all of the needed supplies and after a couple of missteps got all three of the stones set, pendant/ear ring set.  have to finish polishing, then try another set till I get the process down.
