Title: Recent adventures
Post by: Kaljaia on June 01, 2016, 12:55:20 PM
About a week ago I took an intrepid 11-year-old up a creek bed that had the biggest calcite vein I've ever seen in it. We both found some cool rocks. She is playing with wire wrapping and making necklaces out of anything that looks colorful.

Yesterday on the way to town I stopped to get eggs from a place very close to the road and much, much more kid-friendly than the Old Military location. This one's 'on the way' to town and ten minute walk across comparatively level ground. I found a big egg core there ages ago and decided to check it out again.

Two egg cores and some petrified wood

A chunk of matrix with pale pink vugs

Some cut eggs from this spot:

Not as flashy as the Old Military eggs but a good place to take kids.

One of those look a lot like a Lucky Strike egg I am working on.  Thanks for taking a kid out. I am sure some of the rest of us are a little envious.....
I have some young folks in my world that are just discovering rocks and lapidary. I feed them rocks and equipment...
They love it and are creating things I have never done.
I hope there are a bunch of young ones that join us!

Very nice treasure you found.  Also very nice of you to take a kid out.  It's fun to see them find something themselves and get excited about a rock.

Stonemon - have you invited your young friends to join the forum?  If not, please do.  I think they would really like seeing all the different pictures posted by the folks here and they would have a really good place to ask questions and learn more about lapidary, geology and techniques.

Kudos to both of you for mentoring.  :occasion14:

More folks like you and this hobby will be in good shape. I can't wait for the pow wow and get down to eastern Oregon and hopefully visit with friends.

Can't wait to see you again too, Lithic! I'll bring a box of fun things up.
I'm hoping some of the kids here will go to the show, with it being four days long. I may offer to drive up but not sure about taking someone else's kids that far or to that public of an event, as I don't know them that well yet. I will look for books and kid-oriented projects and supplies though.
