Title: Cheetah Jasper
Post by: olgguy on June 04, 2016, 07:58:17 AM
While in Quartzsite this past Feb. I bought two pounds, I am going to cut a cab from the but end of the rough to see how it works up.

I Have cut a lot of it for knife scales and it takes a glass like polish easily.....

Yeah, it does work up nicely. Cut some a few years ago.

Only problem I had was selling it. One vendor who used to buy cabs to use in her jewelry said it looked too much like some synthetic tortoise-shell type material. It never was a big seller in cab form for me, but I still really like it.

Some of that rough even has apatite crystals in it. Have a couple of those just as specimens.

I love this stuff! I have 3 or 4 nice rough chunks of this that I have yet to slab out. I hope to get some nice slabs with some druzy show as I am a sucker for that. Beautiful!!!

It is great material.  Seems harder to get large pieces now.  Slabs can be found at reasonable prices and many with the Apatite crystals included which I find very beautiful.  Your piece will make some very nice stones.

Next time you are in the Q...check out GMI..Gem and Mineral Interiors (I believe is what GMI stands for). They have large quantities of rough and this awesome Cheetah Jasper is one of the things they usually have barrels of. They are based out of Tucson, but set up at Quartzsite every year. They are one of the ones that have an actual building, not a tent, located on the South side of Hwy. 10.

That is where I bought mine. On the corner of the Flea market" The Rock Broker" Tom Brown in Quartzsite (during the winter), in summer he is in Casper, Wy. The material was $4.00 per Lb.

Yep my best Cheetah I got from them and a couple years ago it was large pieces.  This year he had 2 barrels left out of 3 and they were no bigger than half a closed fist in size.  Picked out a couple small pieces that would work for toothpick sized knives but nothing for anything larger.  He did have some very nice AZ high color wood though.

When I was there in 2016 he only had a 5 gal bucket on display. The pieces were 2 to 5 lbs. I did cut the but end of that two pounder.
