I'm going with the local club to McDermit,Nv in two weeks. I'm sure the club will hit the places around McDemit. I've never been there and would like to know what is within 30-50 miles radius. Maybe to many places to collect or list I don't know. I have four days so driving a bit don't bother me. Can anyone list what's in this area with possible directions.
I know local knowledge is a must as I have either taken people out or gave out a detailed map with verbal directions to areas around us. Makes for a great trip!!!
Thanks

I wish I were going! It's a treasure trove of rocks and scenery!

I have a hand drawn map with the mileage marked , pet wood, green jasper, different agates, chicken track (it was a private claim and I heard that it was cleaned out?) picture jasper, there is serenna green jasper that is almost black that is cool. you can drive around the caldera area and see where people have been digging all over . I could scan it and post it or email it to you. someone in your club must be familiar with the area. there is also a geode area but I have not been there, I was not impressed with what I saw collected. The Reno club is going next week but I would rather collect rhodenite

Sandsave - Ask the club what digs or areas they plan to go and ask if they actually know exactly where to sites are they want to collect. I just got back about two weeks ago and my partner and I have about 1,000 pounds of stone we brought back. Purple Cow, Badger Den jasper, Cow Pie Jasper, Disaster Peak Jasper and a new one Burled Wood Jasper (Stromatolite?) We also found a new outcropping of Gary Green that we plan to dig in September. There is petrified wood and Cow Pie's just about any random spot in the desert if you are at the correct elevations so having a GPS to show elevation is a must go. The red mining tailing are from a mercury mine so DO NOt STOP and go through them!

I'll get details on where they plan to go and post.
Thanks

Our McDermitt trip was a success! One of the best rock hounding areas I've been to, lot of variety and collection sites are close to one another.
Thursday morning started out a little shaky as the group leader broke down and had to return home. But I had a couple maps (thanks to Jhon P & Micheal H) so off we went. Once we figured the roads out we had no trouble finding the sites. The purple cow was hard the only site I struggled with as its disguised on the outside, the Feather River Rock club out of Chico, Ca was there that week and helped me out, what a nice group of people and well organized I was very impressed.
I managed to find some really nice opalized wood near one of the sites that didn't list pet wood, it was about 1/2 mile up the hill, it really nice looking wood I'd say would give the opalized conifer from Nephi a run its money in the color department. It was just peeking out at me, had to dig out everything we collected.
I'm only posting a few pics as I don't want anyone to know I'm a hoarder.
The last two pics are Father's Day presents from the kids a piece of Apatite and Black Hills Mica what a haul last week!
Keep your eye on the sphere section on the child board!

Wow nice finds! I hope to go to McDermit soon, maybe this fall if not definitely in the spring!
-
you have a great ability to find great stuff no matter where you go. I can't wait to see the spheres you get out of these.
-
Holy cow! I'd say that was definitely a success! You got some great material there, and a nice variety also.
-
It's not hard to find great material in McDermitt, if anyone has the chance to go don't miss it!!!

All sphere makers are hoarders (I drive a one ton superduty to make sure I can haul it all out) You can drive out there and take a walk almost anywhere and find interesting rock. I am going to make a trip some where in a couple of weeks I want to go to McDermit but may need to meet up with a friend by tonapah. if I don't make it now I am going before winter.

Hi, what is the blue material?

That is a real variety of colors and materials. Looks like you had a great trip. Thanks for showing.
