And had just about enough material left to do one more final snake

Thanks for looking, Kurt

Yeah, like kitty too. First snake and kitty are mine.

Thinking of tapering off the back, so there will be a difference of thickness between top and botom of about 3-4 mm. That angle should allow better viewing of the head and making the rough rind at the bottom visible when worn.

Kurt:

I really like the leopard, great use of the stone and very nice carving. I don't blame you for keeping it!

I love it!  I tell you the small polyp coral is awesome for these carvings!  I ran into a Chinese seller in Quartzsite a couple years ago and he had about (30) 50 gallon drums filled with Bali Petrified Coral and Pet. Wood and he was selling it for $2 a lb!!!!!!!!  I pulled out hundred's of pounds of the coral so he gave me a discount, no idea how he made money.  I was hoping for small polyps in some but only about 10% were.  Have you ever cut a petrified Brain Coral?  The pattern is so unusual and I have only ever gotten one piece when it was first imported about 14 years ago.  Do you ever see the Brain Coral or carve it?

I love your work, great piece!  I would like to buy one our your snakes if that is okay.

Have seen brain coral, but not in cutable state. Will see if and when I get across some.
I'm afraid selling is not an option as I dont sell anything, and all the snakes are spoken for.
Somehow, snakes seem to be very popular, so I wonder why not more people making them. :) :)

That is good and thanks.  The Brain Coral I got had 50% of areas that were a bit porous however you could cut some cabs and probably carve it too.  I found it a bit more of a curiosity and I probably still have most of the piece uncut somewhere.  How thick do you start with in your snake and other small carvings?

When I ask suppliers, I ask them to give me pieces that are between 5-12mm thick. The first and last snake is about 6mm and the doublesided ones about 8mm.

I like the snakes too. I think that I will copy your design and give it a go with some lapis Nevada that has a lot if green.(with your permission, please) The leopard is great. My instructor did a leopard with yellow palm root, I like the coral better!!!

Absolutely. No problem to copy. Always glad when something inspires trying something new. Lets see how you can improve on the design.

Nice work Kurt, I really like the leopard, I recon that is one of your best faces. Great to see you still maturing as a carver.

I like them both, and the coral seems a nice material too. I like the different color of the base of the leopard.
well done, as usual.
What will you do with them, pendants?
