Everyone, for some reason (i have no clue why) the image upload size got changed.
Please limit your images to 800x600 in size. i have changed the KB per image size back to 150KB for each image.
this means the photo has to be resized before you can upload it, opening the huge 1300x3200 megapixel images is taking too long.
Yes, i understand we have unlimited bandwidth here, that isnt the issue. its taking forever to see images on mobile devices.
Resizing to 800x600 or 600x800 is perfect for all devices.
This 600x800 and 800x600 fits here great, if you wish to see a humungous image, just klick the image name under each image and open the images in your imaging programs on your PC and zoom in and out.
For example, this ring image below is resized to 800x600 in my image resizer. Its very easy to see details.
Thanks everyone.
Phish.

Please read through this other topic for resizing help.

If we dont do this the forum will slow down and annoy us all very very soon.

Does this effect the sizes imported from Photobucket?

Thanks for standardizing the image size. Have seen many posts where it was impossible to see the entire subject of a photo due to the huge images.
Sometimes it was impossible to identify the elephant by scrolling around in a huge photo. This will be better.

No, it does not limit photobucket image links or any other image hosting links.
Just the uploads directly to the site here, i have the settings to automatically resize the shown images after links and uploads, but if we can all make the images a little smaller the photos will all load faster for all.

you will also notice i have the forum outlining perimeter to adjust automatically to the size of your screens, if its wide the forum is wide if its narrow the forum is also. Hence no images on the left or right columns, i despise having crap on the edges, it ruins a forums homely homey feel (fixed it for ya, Phish! - R).
I am just trying to make things run easy here is all.

Trying to post three 800X600's and getting denied. Is this intentional? I understand that we don't want to get swamped with multi-Meg images but it's still nice to see a few views of a piece and get to analyze details. Can we get a little more slack? :occasion14:
-
Update - getting denied with one image that's smaller than 800X600... ?
Resized down to 400 X 650 and the images are still 260K. 160K is really too small to show good detail IMO. Remember that images with fine detail don't compress nearly as much as snapshots with large areas of uniform color (blue skies, etc.)
Thanks!

You need to adjust resolution to get it sized smaller, not just overall size. Try Irfanview, ACDsee, any photo editor. I use ACDsee's optimizer and it allows me to adjust both image size and file size without losing any detail.

WINDOWS 10: This will reduce your pic. to about 160, if not play with the 750 horizontal number
1) go to "this PC"
2) click on "pictures"
3) double click on file containing the pic you want
4) click "edit"
5) click "on the pic you want"
6) click "Resize"
7) click " Pixels"
8) Change Horizontal number to "750"
9) click "OK"
10) Close
11) Click "Save"

Thanks to both for the help. I'm very versed in Photoshop and understand image file size and compression. I still feel 160K is too small to show good detail (moss, plumes, etc.). I regularly use 1000k as the minimum long dimension on FB and eBay. It allows you to zoom in and appreciate the finer details of intricate structures in the stone. Pics are still well under 1 meg (300K - 600K). If it's little pics from now on, so be it. Just think the pendulum might have swung a bit too far. My 2 cents.
Cheers!

FYI, I tried posting 2 pics, one 35K and one 75K, both under the maximum 160. They were refused.

I PM'd Randy to let him know we were having a problem. He hasn't responded yet, so he may be off somewhere. We'll get it fixed. I don't know that much about the settings for the forum, so I don't want to mess it all up. :icon_scratch:
-
i will reset to 1000kb
it just takes forever on my tmobile phone for pictures to open. same with this slow as a frozen snail DSL. :LOLOL:
-
test 74 KB. Smaller file size Ok with me, but somehow it was refusing even the smaller ones.
:dontknow:
-
Phil, I will look into this tomorrow with sleep under my belt. Right now it is past my bedtime and I'm afraid if I fiddled with settings now I'd break something and then Randy would come after me with the whip instead of me going after him! :LOLOL:
-
Phil I just went in and took a good look at the attachment settings for the forum. With 1000 kb maximum per image and a total maximum of 2000 kb per post, you shouldn't be having a problem. I'm a touch confused. :icon_scratch:
-
Seems to be fixed. was a problem only before the 1K 2K was restored?
-
As long as it seems to be working then, I'm not going to touch anything.

I realize I am new here, but limiting photo size to accommodate cell phone viewers sounds a little lame to me. Very lame in fact. This is the only forum I am a member of that requires this. I am sure everybody here has a computer, let the full size photos go through and let the phone users use their computers to view pics if they are really interested.

If you read further through the topic you will find that the photo size limit was put back up to the original size, it is just set to create smaller thumbnails which will enlarge when someone clicks on the picture.

Are attachments limited to jpeg format or can other formats such as gif be used?

Last I knew almost any format could be uploaded, I haven't changed that setting.

I wish I had seen this sooner.
However I'm on a computer just like you are and I'm not having any problems uploading photos.
The only way to help you would be to know the size of what you are trying to upload, where you are uploading from, and the file format you are using for your photos.

Don't sweat it, Amanda. If that person (last year) had known there would be NO forum if you guys hadn't intervened, maybe he/she might have had a better attitude. Better off without people like that... .

Point taken. I do however want to try to help people, so if I am made aware of a problem I do try to do everything in my power to fix the issue and then scream for help from Randy if I can't.
-
I think he had other issues or he wouldn't have stated the problem the same time he left giving no one time to fix it or respond even if they had seen it. He was leaving, he just wanted to make a statement.

thanks for the 2 MB attachment for photos

If everyone altered their images to PNG rather than JPEG, it automatically shrinks them without changing the actual quality.
