Title: Diamond Pacific Titan - Problems
Post by: Debbie K on July 20, 2016, 04:49:24 PM
As you guys may remember, I belong to a local gem and mineral society that has a large shop. Today, the shop foreman showed me a Titan that a club member had brought in to have him help fix.

He showed me the inside of the motor casing; it was corroded from water. Evidently, the older models had been sealed or calked, but the newer models totally lack an effective barrier from the water. The wires had also gotten wet; it looked bad.

At about $3000.00 per unit, these things aren't cheap. He said that the guy had also had trouble with the capacitor, which is why they had taken it apart in the first place. I think that they are now being made in China, and it appears that some corners are being cut.

Just thought that you guys needed to be made aware of a potentially dangerous situation.

Debbie, I would tell him to call Don at Diamond Pacific and talk to him about the problem, especially if it's a newer model.  Don's a good guy -- I'm sure he'd want to help make it right.

They are not made in China, they are made in Barstow CA.
I will second the advice that if you have a problem with it call Don at DP, they are great guys and will work with you.

I'll tell our shop foreman that he should let the owner know that he should call Don; it isn't my machine. I agree with you guys that Diamond Pacific should be made aware of the problem, otherwise, how will it ever get fixed? It looked make a product liability/personal injury lawsuit in the making to me, and I'll recommend that DP be contacted.

The motors are Baldor, the only motor made in USA.  Baldor was bought out by a European company so no longer American owned.  DP has had motors from Baldor for both the Genie and Titan that were defective.  They test them in house before assembling and even have a shaft straightening machine they use to make sure they run true.  Their customer service is usually very good.  Give them a chance to correct the problem before posting unfavorable comments like "they are making them in China" etc.

I said "I think", not that "they are" made in China.

My understanding is and was that Baldor are or were very good motors. The main problem was, as I said before, there was water leaking into the housing which was corroding the wires and probably getting into the motor also.

I am not defaming all the Titans, I'm just telling you guys what I saw. Do what you want to with the information. As I've said before, it isn't my unit but I'll tell the shop foreman that Diamond Pacific has the reputation, according to some of you, of standing behind their products and fixing problems and he can tell the owner. But I maintain that if you're paying $3,000.00 for a unit, it isn't an unrealistic expectation that it not have these sorts of issues. I personally wouldn't want to spend that type of money and end up having to ship a motor or the whole grinder back and forth, or maybe have the problems that can occur when mixing water and electricity.

But I do hear what you guys are saying. The manufacturer should be notified otherwise they don't even know that there is a problem, and how can they fix what they don't know about. If it were mine, I definitely would do just that. I'll see what I can do about getting them to pass on the information.

Baldor makes motors in the US, Mexico, EU, and China.  They probably sell 20 different models that could be used for this application.  Only The OEM that specs the motor can tell you where it comes from, and even then they may not know until they see the box.  I am sure the motor used in the Titan is specified as TEFC.  That one just slipped through with a bad seal.  It shouldn't be a big deal to get it taken care of.

Hi All

I would have to agree that Baldor motors are very good. I work maintenance in a food processing plant and almost all the motors in our wash down area are Baldor.

Check the serial number (not the engraved DP number) to see if it has a "W" or an "F" in front of it. These represent Westville, OK and Fort Smith, AR. According to Don at DP it should have one or the other if it's the original motor for that machine.
