I think I am blurring the border between a cab and a carving but I love doing the curves to match the pattern within the stone. It is Piranha Agate and it is rather large at 5" tall.

Beautiful form and I don't think there is a line anymore with that cab. I can't help but think of sharks with the 3 fins coming out. Lovely stone.

I think it's a great cab. Instead of a shark I see a graceful dolphin when the image is rotated this way:

Wowza! Boy oh boy the cabs showing up in the last few days are amazing.

Definitely a cabochon! And a very beautiful one. The only question is the smallest inside curve looks difficult even for a 4" wheel. If you run a belt off the edge of the drum you can do it on the unsupported edge.

The smaller curves were shaped with a flex shaft machine and silicon carbide 1" Mizzy wheels run dry. They were sanded on a 8" expando wheel by running the belt 1/4" hanging over the side of the wheel. The polishing of these curves was done with a bullet shaped small hard felt wheel and rapid polish.

With the additional information on procedure, I have to change my classification to a BEAUTIFUL CARVING.

I am going to call it a highly stylized freeform cab.
I love how the shape follows the stone pattern!

Probably most carvers would say that once you start doing internal or negative cuts it starts to be a carving. A cabochon is typically a gem that has all positive or outer cut sides and is easier to set in a standard bezel setting. These observations are just from what I've seen in the market and aren't dictionary definitions.

Love the curve to the stone and colours. Beautiful shine.
