Title: Another reason I love living in the desert in summer!
Post by: ToTheSummit on August 04, 2016, 03:23:57 PM
Summer thunderstorms in the desert are spectacular!  Whenever the conditions are right I try to get a few pictures of the lightning.  Even though I had to be to work early this morning I sacrificed some sleep to go watch Mother Nature perform her light show last night.  If it wasn't for work I could've stayed up for many more hours than I did but I'm glad I took the time to go out at all.  This was my favorite shot of the night.

Getting a good shot of lightning is pretty darn difficult. Very nice snap!

Beautiful shot!  We didn't get any lightening to watch last night up here in the high country.

I've been shooting lightning for over 20 years.  It was much more difficult in the days when I used film.  The onset of digital photography made it much easier because I can shoot unlimited photos and see the results immediately.  Last night I shot 175 frames, the first was time stamped at 9:03PM and the last at 10:24PM.  Thats an average of a little over 2 shots per minute.  They range from 4 second exposures to over 40 seconds.

In the days of film that would be have been more than 7 rolls of film (at 24 exposures per roll) and the cost for film and developing would be unreasonable.  Especially considering that I only captured a bolt of lightning on about 20% of those shots and there is only a handful of really nice ones among those.  Out of all 175 frames I think only maybe a half dozen would be worth sharing, and the one above was my favorite.  Still, some of my favorite pictures were taken on film in the 90s.  But digital really did make it much easier.

The weather service around here loves to say; "When thunder roars go indoors." Not me. Like you I go out and take pictures, or just enjoy it. My pictures never turn out that nice, but I have fun trying.
