Title: Retrofitting arbor with smaller diameter wheels

Hi all:  I am a newbie enjoying the process of building out the shop.  Picked up a nice arbor from an estate with 8 inch pans.  The motor has 3 pulley diameters and so does the arbor, so I have some flexibility here.  I have 8 inch diamond wheels through #600 on my HP B-50, I want to go with #1200 and #3000 in this arbor, but I like the option of Nova wheels at the cheaper 6 inch wheel price.  What does your wisdom and experience say about this?  Also, with 8-inch pans, am I asking for unwanted splash?  What else might I be missing?

It sounds like you already know about the need to increase the rpm.  This will have an effect on the life of the bearings, but unless you use it every day you will never notice.  To reduce the splash you can hang a shield or stiff cloth in front of the wheels.  That is very common anyway.  The only other thing I think you will run into is that your hand rest is a bit further away from the wheels.  That just makes it easier to add padding for your wrists.

The 6" Nova wheels are 1-1/2" wide vs. 2" wide for the 8". If you work larger pieces that might be a consideration.

Thanks for the tips.  So from what I read, that provided I up the rotational speed to account for the smaller diameter wheels and create a splash shield, it is straightforward.
