Has any one ever competed in an "American Federation of Mineralogical Societies" or any of the other associated regionals. From what I see on the forum, we have some potential winners here. For instance, I am in the 11 state area Of the "Midwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies". First you have to be a member of a club that is a member.

I'm in the SCFMS region of the AMFED, and have participated at our local show for gemstone carving. My understanding is that if you want to compete in the overall region, you have to win first place in your local region. I got first place in my region and could go on to the region at large, but never saw anything that discusses where and how to do it. There was very little competition locally, so it was disappointing. I have no idea if there is a national competition.
The competitions are mainly for website for the region or club and informative articles and videos. Not so much on the "applied" end of working with rocks.
If I'm incorrect, I'd love to hear about it.

It used to be you needed an entry form to the AMFS signed by your club president. The AFMS NATIONALS rotate around the country and are held in conjunction with one of the regional shows every year. If you have not won your own regional you can enter the regional that is hosting the AMFS and if you win the regional you are automatically put into the AMFS competition. You can win both at one show. I have not seen the current rule book in a long time, and I would get a copy so you enter the right category. It is also advisable to visit one of the shows before entering to see the competing cases and read the judges report sheets, which will list the mistakes that have been made. www.amfed.org/region.htm

Many years ago...'78 maybe...I won the Junior Lapidary National award. Of course it was not hard to win since not many (juniors, under 18) people competed, and you had to travel to the site of the national competetion to win...and again, not many juniors did so. I was in a very active geology club in my junior high school and we had a lapidary 'lab' in the basement of the school.
